Direct sun makes everyone narrow their eyes, which hides the top of the iris and kills the colour. Do not fight it with a huge grin; instead drop the chin slightly and let the eyes stay open.

Turn about a quarter away from the sun so the light rakes across the face rather than hitting it head-on. The blue catches light without a hard shadow across the eye.
