Shiki Ryougi Cosplay Contact Lenses: Working With a Black Lens
A solid black lens is the hardest design to photograph. There is no colour to catch the light, so contrast has to come from somewhere else.
The mask is your contrast
Solid black lenses only read against something lighter. Keep pale skin and a bright collar in frame or the eye disappears.
Do not over-light the face
Blasting the face flattens a solid lens and makes it look like a rendering error. Keep the key light soft and directional.
Watch for the blank stare
A flat black lens can look lifeless. A catchlight in each eye is what makes the stare read as deliberate.
Cold and still
No expression, level gaze, chin slightly down. That is the whole character.
The review we hear most
“Solid black lenses are supposed to look dead, and with one catchlight each they look sharp instead.”
